In the text, Britt is a young amitious and individualistic woman. She graduated
from Oxford, got a good job, etc. Still, she feels unhappy because she is alone.
Can we have anything if we try hard enough ?
I think that trying hard is absolutely necessary to achieve anything good.
We all begin our life with advantages and disadvantages : this is our potential.
From this potential, we can either succeed or fail in every aspect of our life.
People who don’t try hard often fail in many things : they have no control over
their destiny and leave everything to luck. They sometimes succeed, by chance,
but most of them fail. On the other hand, those who work hard and are concentrated
almost always succeed.
Still, what does "success" mean ? It is obviously much harder to
go to the best schools if you come from a lower class family than if you come
from an upper-class family. Therefore, "success" depends on what you
were given at the very beginning. Therefore, one can be considered "succesful"
if he reaches the best of his given potential. For example, a worker’s son who
becomes an engineer will probably be very proud of himself, even though he could
have a much better job.
To conclude, you cannot have anything you want if you try hard enough : you
can have anything which you can reasonably think is reachable. This is often
very different, except if you are very reasonable and able to assess what goals
you can have.
